What is a VULVA?

The vulva is the external genital area, including the labia, clitoris, and vaginal opening, which is the entrance to the vagina that leads to internal parts such as the uterus.

How to Apply Clobetasol Ointment - Properly

Proper application of clobetasol ointment is essential for effectively managing vulvar lichen sclerosus (VLS). Follow these steps to ensure safe and effective use:

  1. Wash Hands Thoroughly:
Before application, clean your hands with soap and water to prevent introducing bacteria to the sensitive vulvar area.

  2. Cleanse the Affected Area:
Gently cleanse the vulvar region with lukewarm water. Avoid using soaps or harsh cleansers, as they can cause irritation. Pat the area dry with a soft towel.

  3. Apply a Thin Layer of Ointment:
Squeeze a small amount of clobetasol ointment (approximately the size of a pea) onto your fingertip. Gently apply a thin layer to the affected areas of the vulva, including any white patches or areas of itching or discomfort. Ensure even coverage without rubbing harshly.

  4. Wash Hands After Application:
After applying the ointment, wash your hands to remove any residual medication.

  5. Follow Frequency Instructions:
Apply the ointment as directed by your healthcare provider. A common regimen involves applying the ointment once daily initially and then reducing frequency as symptoms improve (Krapf et al., 2020).

  6. Avoid Contact with Mucous Membranes:
Apply the ointment externally, avoiding the vaginal opening or other mucous membranes unless directed by your healthcare provider.

  7. Monitor for Side Effects:
Be aware of potential side effects, such as skin thinning or increased sensitivity. Contact your healthcare provider with any concerns.
